Stanwood, Washington: A Church and a Cemetery

Way back in 1902 my great grandfather Helge Mathias Tjernagel went to Stanwood Washington to be the pastor at the first Norwegian Lutheran church on the Pacific Coast. In Stanwood he met a lively young lady, Anna Brue. They married and went on to live in Alaska, Santa Barbara, Wisconsin, and finally Iowa. They had 12 babies, 8 that survived infancy. One of them was my grandmother on my mother’s side.

Anna was born in Stanwood so since we were driving near the area we took a jog off the road to see the church where Helge was a pastor.

A few miles away from the church we found a cemetery with some Brue ancestors.
