City of Rocks State Park isn’t the easiest park to get to, but it’s worth the trip. I’ve seen images from City of Rocks on Instagram for a good long while and thought, dang that place is amazing. Turns out, it’s super amazing.
It’s basically a bed of volcanic rock formations popping up in the middle of a flat plain. It was called a “city” or rocks because the tall pinnacles look like buildings and the eroded paths between them look like streets. Sort of. But you can get something of a sense of walking through a ruined village. There’s a bit of a Stonehenge feel there too.
Given that we visited during Covid times, the park is open during limited hours and there’s hardly anyone there. We saw two other small groups and once we were in the rocks wandering around the paths, we couldn’t see or hear anyone.
